
Lady Uddin, a peer from the House of Lords in London has urged British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to launch an Autism Task Force to consult widely and work in partnership with government departments, parents groups, community organisations, charities and the voluntary sector.
Members of Parliament have also supported Baroness Uddin's proposal for a UK Autism Task Force - Wanstead MP Harry Cohen tabled early day motion 705 calling for such a Task Force.
Baroness Uddin told the media that she fully supports the call of Ivan Corea, head of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK for a national strategy on autism and a 10 year plan of action. Peers and MP have joined forces in backing the Autism Awareness Campaign UK.
Lord Andrew Adonis, said Her Majesty's Government welcomed the work of the Autism Awareness Campaign.
Autism campaigners had called for an Autism Day in Westminster, a question on autism was posed by Baroness Pola Uddin in the House of Lords on Wednesday 16th January. MPs had also tabled a range of questions on autism and Harry Cohen initiated an early day motion on autism.
Lee Scott MP for Ilford North launched his Autism Bill which was passed unopposed onto the next stage in May this year. Scott has been calling for ring fenced funding for autism services. The Ilford North MP who also sits on the Select Committee on Health in Parliament has championed the cause of autism. Scott also spoke at the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism.
The Secretary of State for Children was invited to speak at the APPGA by the chair Tim Loughton MP. Many parents from across the UK attended the APPGA meeting and voiced their concerns to the Children's Secretary. Parents and people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome are urging him to take action on autism.
