Most young adults take their freedoms for granted - they can choose their friends, stay out late, learn to drive and decide what they want to do as a career. But for people growing up on the autistic spectrum, life is very different. Stuck in a strange limbo between childhood and adulthood, they are unable to make these choices.

This documentary follows three people with autism at pivotal moments on the rocky road to being accepted as an adult. They are all fighting for independence and responsibility, but being frustrated by the shackles imposed on them by their disability, their families and the preconceived ideas of mainstream society.

23-year-old Oli has high-functioning autism (HFA) and is looking to find work. He is finding it tough as his condition means that he can't communicate or deal with pressure in the same way others can.

Thomas has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is approaching 16, the legal age of adulthood. As he does so, he is demanding more independence and wants to escape his family. But the freedom he is after is not forthcoming from his parents.

Alex, 24, is looking for love, but when you have the type of autism known as Asperger syndrome, communicating and socialising can seem an impossible task.

They have also launched a new online petition in support of Gary McKinnon who hacked into 97 America military computers at the Pentagon and Nasa between 2001 and 2002.

Lord Carlile, the Home Office's adviser on terror laws, said extraditing Mr McKinnon would be "cruel and unconscionable" when he could be prosecuted in the UK. Opposition Leader David Cameron said he remained "far from convinced" that extradition was the right course of action and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has stated that there was no reason why Mr McKinnon should not be tried in the UK.The autism campaigner in the House of Commons Lee Scott has also signed a letter written by MPs to President Obama. Gary McKinnon was recently backed by Cabinet member, Peter Hain, the Welsh Secretary.

Gary McKinnon is also supported by former Home Secretary David Blunkett, Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Sir Bob Geldoff, Dave Gilmour, Chrissy Hynde, Nick Hornby, Trudie Styler and human rights campaigner Terry Waite among a whole host of celebrities and charities. Ivan Corea and Kevin Healey have appealed directly to President Barack Obama on Gary McKinnon.

Ivan Corea said: ' UKAF has joined forces with autism campaigner Kevin Healey of SAAS in appealing to President Obama to show compassion and allow him to be tried in the UK. Gary McKinnon is no terrorist. He has Asperger's Syndrome. He admits he has done wrong - we maintain that autism is a very complex world and sometimes you have unexplained behaviour. Gary was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome by the eminent Professor Simon Baron Cohen. He says he was looking for evidence on UFOs. We urge President Obama to be compassionate where Gary McKinnon is concerned,' he said.

The UK Autism Foundation has joined forces with SAAS, the Autism Trust and others in setting up a new online petition in support of Gary McKinnon.

UKAF and SAAS are urging people to sign this new petition in support of Gary McKinnon. His lawyers have 28 days to appeal against the High Court decision.

Fresh from their success in getting the Gurkhas the same rights as other Commonwealth soldiers, national newspaper the Daily Mail is siding with Gary McKinnon to prevent the government from extraditing him to the US.

On Friday, the newspaper dedicated its front page to the new campaign that it decided to back. It has published several articles about the case and has even published an online petition which has been viewed by thousands and attracted comments from hundreds.

On the same day, McKinnon's mother, Janis Sharp, together with Sting's other half, Trudie Styler, presented another petition signed by more than 4300 to the Sarah Brown, the Prime Minister's wife. And according to the Daily mail, Ms Brown "wept" together with the two women and pledged support to the Daily Mail's campaign to stop the extradition process.

Opposition leaders including Conservative leader David Cameron and his Liberal alterego, Nick Clegg have both given their backing to the campaign.

Gary McKinnon is accused of hacking US Military and NASA computer servers in 2001 and 2002 causing around $700,000 worth of damages. But rather than looking to start a Third world war, McKinnon was more concerned about finding evidence of extraterrestrial life on the hard disks of those computers. Nevertheless, the extradition process only started in 2005 and failed to be derailed by appeals to the house of lords and the European Court of Human Rights.

It was also revealed that the self-taught hacker had Asperger's Syndrome. Ironically, this latest move comes as the government has announced that it would be recruiting former hackers to help it protect UK computer systems from the threats of foreign hackers.

Over fifty parliamentarians of all parties have signed early day motion 1551 on Autism and the Cerer's Allowance. The motion was tabled by Lee Scott MP in the House of Commons in Westminster. Autism campaigners have been calling on the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State at the Department of Work and Pensions to substantially increase the Carer's Allowance.

Autism Carers deserve better. Some are on 75 pence an hour, in terms of the allowances. There are many who are not even on any allownces. Autism is a 24 hour job and parents and carers are in need of urgent help and support. The UK Autism Foundation has been spearheading a campaign for substantial increases to the Carer's Allowance for all those who are caring for children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

EDM 1551 now before the House of Commons states:

That this House pays tribute to and acknowledges the valuable contribution made by thousands of parents and carers in supporting the needs of children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome; supports the call of the UK Autism Foundation urging the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to consider a substantial increase to the carer's allowance; shares the concern of the UK Autism Foundation that the present economic crisis is plunging some parents, carers and families with autism into poverty; and backs the call of autism campaigners for the Government to increase tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance in order for parents, carers and children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome to survive the credit crunch and the deepening recession.

Alan and Ann Keen in a special message said:

"We are very sorry that we cannot be with you tonight for this very auspicious occasion. The hard work and dedication of the UK Autism Foundation deserves huge support and we are extremely impressed with the Foundation's achievements to date.

We hope you all have a great evening and raise lots of money to continue to help fund the Foundation's excellent work."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown signed a very special bottle of House of Commons Claret which was auctioned on the night. He sent his best wishes.

Ivan Corea of UKAF thanked CDA Events Management Services for organising the 'Scope for Hope' dinner dance - the event was well supported by the business and medical communities.

The UK Autism Foundation has been campaigning on behalf of families with autism who are below the poverty line. Ivan Corea urged all those present at the 'Scope for Hope' dinner to support the work of UKAF.

Lee Scott MP for Ilford North who has been campaigning in the House of Commons for parents, carers, children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome is calling on Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Government to increase the carer's allowance for possibly over a million carers who are looking after children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome in the United Kingdom.

There are 500,000 people with autism in the UK and over 100,000 children are on the autism spectrum. Recently Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote for the first time on autism when he contacted the UK Autism Foundation to share his Autism Plan. Support for UKAF's autism awareness campaign has also come from David Cameron who wrote to the foundation and said: 'As many as one in a hundred people could be affected by some form of autism, and it is important that we recognise and raise awareness of the difficulties and challenges that they can face.'

Ivan Corea of UKAF said: ' Many carers are plunging into poverty as a result of the credit crunch and the recession. Lee Scott MP is backing UKAF's call to parliamentarians of all parties in the House of Commons to support our campaign to raise the carer's allowance for carers who are working around the clock for children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Autism is a 24 hour job and we urge the Prime Minister to listen to the voices of parents and carers.'

The early day motion tabled by Lee Scott MP reads:

Autism And The Carer's Allowance

That this house pays tribute and acknowledges the valuable contribution made by thousands of parents and carers, in supporting the needs of children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome; supports the call of the UK Autism Foundation urging the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State at the Department of Work and Pensions to consider a substantial increase to the carer's allowance; shares the concern of the UK Autism Foundation that the present economic crisis is plunging some parents, carers and families with autism into poverty; backs the call of autism campaigners for Her Majesty's Government to increase the tax credits, the disabilities living allowance and the carer's allowance in order for parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome to survive the credit crunch and the deepening recession.

The UK Autism Foundation has endorsed ‘Gauntlet’ the thriller written by the Canadian author, Richard Aaron. The book was recently launched in London in the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster. Richard Aaron met with British autism campaigners Lee Scott MP, Member of the House of Commons Select Committee on Health and Patron of UKAF, together with Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation. UKAF hopes to hand over signed copies to Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Richard Aaron has modelled the hero of his new novel Gauntlet, a techno-thriller, on his own autistic son, now a young adult. The book is a tribute to the special and often unrecognized talents possessed by his son, and Richard hopes it will encourage people to see past autism to the very real abilities that many autistic people have.

Gauntlet, the new techno-thriller from Richard Aaron, published by Glass House Press, introduces the world to autistic savant Hamilton Turbee, a character who embodies both the astounding abilities and tragic misunderstandings of autism. Richard goes one step further and puts a young man with the social condition on the international stage. Turbee proves himself to be the only one capable of tracking the bad guys when he becomes the one with the answers to the questions. His specific brain chemistry and functionality set him up, in the end, as the man who might save the nation.

For the first time, an autistic person plays 007; America’s hero, out to stop the attack in the only way he understands – by being more clever than anyone else.

As father to an autistic child, Richard Aaron writes from personal experience and a longtime study of the condition, making Turbee both realistic and understandable, and giving the world a better idea of the many aspects that go into the disorder. The author has made it his personal mission to inspire his own son, Taylor, and the thousands of autistic children throughout the world, by giving them a role model worth their attention.

On a larger scale, Gauntlet is a very current story about terrorism on American soil, with all the bells and whistles of a great international suspense/techno thriller novel. Aaron has included an added depth with a cast of unique and important characters, working both for and against each other in a mad race against the clock. Conspiracy theories abound, and the bad guys keep the good guys in the dark until the last second.

'I was delighted to meet Richard Aaron in the Palace of Westminster, during his visit to London. I look forward to reading 'Gauntlet.' The main character in his book has autism. Many of us in the House of Commons have been campaigning on the serious issues concerning autism and Asperger's Syndrome. As Patron of the UK Autism Foundation I welcome Richard Aaron's commitment to all people with autism...'

                        Lee Scott MP
House of Commons
Westminster

' Computer mastermind Hamilton Turbee, the hero in Richard Aaron's book 'Gauntlet' has autism and yet he was given the chance to fulfil his potential. I found 'Gauntlet' absolutely riveting - it is such a good read and a fiction masterpiece. 'Gauntlet' is a huge plus for all people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome around the world - they all have potential....'

Last year they launched a new autism charity for a new generation, the UK Autism Foundation campaigning on behalf of families with autism who are below the poverty line.

Ivan and Charika Corea were joined by UKAF Chair of Trustees Norman Darling, Becky Harcourt, Co-Leader of the New Wine Network, Financial Secretary Stephen Timms MP, Lee Scott MP, Member of the Health Select Committee, Mike Gapes MP, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Cllr. Alan Weinberg, Leader of Redbridge Council.

Ivan Corea urged people to back and support families with autism who are below the poverty line. The recession has devastated families with autism - people have lost their homes and jobs and are facing financial pain. The UK Autism Foundation has urged Her Majesty's Government to support poor families.

Joan Ruddock MP, Under- Secretary of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, has personally responded to the UK Autism Foundation, after the charity campaigned hard on the issue of Autism and Fuel Poverty.

UKAF has called on HM Government to ease the burdens of families with autism who are below the poverty line by addressing the winter fuel poverty issue. UKAF has maintained that some families are in fuel poverty and had to choose between heating and eating. They needed urgent help.

Backing for the UK Autism Foundation's appeal came from parliamentarians of all parties who signed an early day motion in the House of Commons on Autism and Winter Fuel Poverty tabled by Rudi Vis MP. EDM 281 was signed by 58 MPs in the Palace of Westminster.

'Fuel Poverty is an issue which the Government takes very seriously. We also appreciate the finance is an issue of great importance to people with a disability, including families with autism. I note that you are urging energy companies to consider social tariffs for all families with disabilities, including families with autism. As the majority of fuel poverty households also have the lowest incomes, the Government has taken the approach that the most fair and efficient method of identifying vulnerable householders who need help is through the receipt of benefits (primarily means tested),' said Minister Joan Ruddock in a letter to Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation.

The Minister covered areas of concern highlighted by the UK Autism Foundation - including pre-payment meters and the controversy over higher direct debit payments taken by energy suppliers.

Joan Ruddock, writing to the UK Autism Foundation added: ' The Government acknowledges that disabled people can face extra costs, particularly with reference to food, transport and extra heating. That is why help is already available through disability benefits and the disability premium in income-related benefits in recognition of the extra costs, which can include heating.'

Ivan Corea said: 'The deepening recession is hitting families with autism who are below the poverty line very hard - many are in financial pain. If the recession worsens in 2009-2010 many families with disabilities will need extra help. The Government must ensure that families with autism will receive support with regards to their heating bills. Profits have been made at the expense of the vulnerable. Energy Companies must ensure that they reach out to families with disabilities - by introducing special social tariffs and support them during the economic downturn.'

The autism campaigner in the House of Commons, Lee Scott MP has also written to energy companies urging them to help families with autism who are below the poverty line.

UKAF has also appealed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance in the 2009 Budget scheduled to be delivered by the Chancellor on Wednesday 22nd April in Parliament. The UKAF appeal enjoys the support of parliamentarians of all parties in the House of Commons.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling will deliver his second Budget on the 22nd of April 2009. The budget comes at a time when the United Kingdom and many countries around the world are facing a severe economic crisis and a global recession.

The poor are bearing the brunt of the recession. Food prices have gone up - including gluten free products - used by families with autism. Parents have lost their jobs and homes of families with autism have been re-possessed. Some families are in fuel poverty and have had to choose between heating and eating.

The UK Autism Foundation has appealed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to reach out to families with autism who are below the poverty line.

Recently the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, wrote about autism for the first time. Writing to the UK Autism Foundation, Gordon Brown said: ' We are determined that people with autism and their families get the support they need and deserve, and know that without it the condition can have a devastating impact. ' The Prime Minister also outlined the Government's Autism Plan in his letter to the UK Autism Foundation.

UKAF also heard from the Care Services Minister Phil Hope MP who said that he wants to help parents, carers and people with autism.

Ivan Corea said: 'The April 22nd Budget is absolutely crucial. We are urging Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to help parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Life is extremely hard for many families who are suffering as a result of the economic downturn and the recession. UKAF is calling for Chancellor Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance on 22nd of April. He must help the poor. The economic crisis is having a crippling effect on families with autism who are below the poverty line.'

UKAF has urged Chancellor Alistair Darling to seize the opportunity and reach out to the marginalised and the vulnerable in the April 2009 Budget.

Phil Hope MP, Minister of State for Care Services at the Department of Health has written to Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation stating that 'Autism is a vitally important issue and we want to do more to support people with the condition and their families. We know that, left unsupported, autism can have a devastating impact on people and families. We also know that they do not get the support they need and deserve.'

The Minister informed the UK Autism Foundation that the DCSF is leading a complementary programme of work to improve provision for children with autism and their families. It will be increasing its funding for the Autism Education Trust in the coming financial year to support the Trust in working with local authorities and Primary Care Trusts to improve the commissioning of services for children with the condition. Subject to Royal Assent for the Apprentiships, Skills Children and Learning Bill, DCSF will be consulting on new statutory guidance for Children and Young People's Plans which clearly reflects the needs of disabled children, including those with autism. Phil Hope said this will ensure services in a range of areas - health, social care and education, for example - are all better tailored to the needs of autistic children.

This programme is in addition to work with the Department of Health on transitions and work already being taken forward on developing in-service teacher training materitals on autism, on bullying and exclusions of children with special education needs and short breaks. This programme of work with children and young people with autism is now underpinned by the Child Health Strategy announced on 28th January by Ed Balls and Alan Johnson, which included further funding of £340 million to fund health services for disabled children, including children with autism with the most complex needs.

The UK Autism Foundation, a registered British charity, has been lobbying and campaigning on behalf of families with autism who are below the poverty line. Over 200 MPs of all parties have signed three early day motions in the House of Commons supporting UKAF's appeal. Recently Prime Minister Gordon Gordon wrote to the UK Autism Foundation - for the first time - on autism. David Cameron and Nick Clegg have also contacted UKAF on the serious issues of autism.

Ivan Corea 'While I welcome the moves by the Government to do more for parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome I am urging the Prime Minister Gordon Brown to end the postcode lottery to public services in 2009 not in 10 years time. Familes and people with autism desperately need help. We have appealed to Chancellor Alistair Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance in the April Budget - in order for parents, carers and people with autism to cope with life during the deepening recession.'

The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Gordon Brown has outlined the Government's proposals for autism. The Prime Minister was in touch with British autism campaigner Ivan Corea, father of Charin, a 13 year old boy with autism spectrum disorder. This was history in the making - it was the first time that the Prime Minister has written over his plans for autism.

Parents and carers Ivan and Charika Corea have been campaigning long and hard on autism since 2000 with the Autism Awareness Campaign UK. They initiated 2002 as Autism Awareness Year supported by 800 UK organisations. In 2008 they launched a new autism charity - the UK Autism Foundation. The charity has been campaigning specifically on behalf of families with autism who are below the poverty line. Over 200 MPs have signed three early day motions backing the UK Autism Foundation's call for help for the poor. The EDMs were sponsored by John Battle MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty, Rudi Vis MP and David Drew MP. They attracted all party support in the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown writing to Ivan Corea said:' We are determined that people with autism and their families get the support they need and deserve, and know that without it the condition can have a devastating impact.

We are improving the quality of services provided to adults with autism by:

- publishing good practice Commissioning Guidance for the NHS and local authorities in April;

- launching a consultation on a new national strategy for autism, with the final strategy to be published by the end of the year. The strategy has four main priorities: health, social inclusion (including employment), choice and control, and training. Part of the autism strategy will look at how young people can access appropriate placements, whether that is to study, to get a paid job or to access training. It will also consider how people can be supported to live in their communities and how their needs are addressed.

- issuing statutory guidance, subject to consultation and assessment of benefits. Implementation of the strategy will be driven regionally: led by the Government Offices for the Regions and through the Valuing People Now Regional Boards (for adults with autism who have a learning disability);

- the appointment of Elaine Hill, a national adviser on autism, last October to work with key stakeholders to shape priorities for the strategy;

- determining the best way to help local authorities and other agencies gather data, assess needs and commission services for adults with autism in their area; and

- funding a study on the prevalance of autism in adults, to commence later this year.

I hope you will agree that the action the Government is already taking and will take in the coming months will prove an effective way of delivering the outcomes we all wish to see for people with autism and their families,' said Prime Minister Gordon Brown in his letter to Ivan Corea from 10 Downing Street.

On the subject of the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day which was held on Thursday 2nd April, the Prime Minister said he would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, supporters and volunteers in all of the organisations who have worked so hard to make World Autism Awareness Day a success.

Ivan Corea said: 'I am delighted with the Prime Minister's personal response on autism. This is the first time that Gordon Brown has written, outlining the Government's intended actions on autism. Her Majesty's Government has accomplished a great deal on autism but there is more work to be done. We really do need an end to the postcode lottery to public services - people are desperate for public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care. We need new streams of funding and the autism campaigner in the House of Commons, Lee Scott MP, has called for ring fenced funding for autism. We welcome the fact that the G20 London Summit focused on the world's poor. The UK Autism Foundation is campaigning specifically on behalf of the poor and we thank all those who supported our call to G20 leaders to reach out to the poor. We now urge Chancellor Alistair Darling to provide real financial support for families with autism in the April 2009 Budget - by increasing the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance. Things are desperate for many, many parents and carers. Fathers and mothers are losing their jobs, the homes of families with autism have been re-possessed by banks - we urge Gordon Brown to stop the re-possessions. Some families are suffering as a result of fuel poverty. Things could get worse if the recession deepens in 2009 and parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome will need more help and support to cope with life during this economic crisis.'

UKAF also supported Cheryl Gillan MP's Autism Bill which goes on to the next stage in the House of Commons.

The UK Autism Foundation was a partner of the historic United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. WAAD was launched by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the 2nd of April 2008, on the recommendation of the State of Qatar. This year, 20 UK charities urged people to 'Stand Up for Autism,' on World Autism Awareness Day.

(London, UK) Prime Minister Gordon Brown has sent a personal response from 10 Downing Street, to autism campaigner Ivan Corea who launched the UK Autism Foundation. The autism campaigner has been urging G20 leaders not to walk by on the other side and reach out to families with autism who are below the poverty line. Gordon Brown said: 'We are determined that people with autism and their families get the support they need and deserve, and know that without it the condition can have a devastating effect.'

Thursday 2nd April 2009 is World Autism Awareness Day. Ivan Corea has urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown to speak up for the marginalized, the socially excluded and the vulnerable at the G20 Conference on World Autism Awareness Day.

Ivan Corea said: 'I am grateful for the Prime Minister's personal response but we need urgent and decisive action on autism. I appeal to G20 leaders to help the vulnerable by providing financial support. Who will bail out parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.I am appealing to President Barack Obama and every single G20 leader on World Autism Awareness Day, please do not walk by on the other side, so many are suffering as a result of the economic crisis. There are 60 million people with autism - some children with autism are at the very edge in Africa and Asia - they have no hope.G20 leaders must help those who are struggling to cope with life.'

Leader of the Opposition David Cameron has also written to to Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation, on World Autism Awareness Day. Mr. Cameron said: "I am pleased to express my support for UN World Autism Awareness Day. As many as one in a hundred people could be affected by some form of autism, and it is important that we recognise and raise awareness of the difficulties and challenges that they can face."

Nick Clegg the Lib Dem leader has also written to the UK Autism Foundation. He said: 'Too many people with autism do not receive the kind of support that would help them achieve their potential, either as children or in adulthood and we firmly believe that more needs to be done to change this. We also know that the economic downturn has hit vulnerable families, such as those with autism, especially hard, this is a challenge to politicians of all parties to ensure they are not forgotten a result of the economic crisis.
Here is the UNSG's message for WAAD 2009 -

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

To Enable Children and Persons with Autism to Lead Full and Meaningful Lives is Not a Far-Off Dream

'By designating 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day, the United Nations General Assembly has helped to galvanize international efforts to promote greater understanding about autism. This year's observance is being marked with lectures, briefings, screenings, musical performances, video conferences, art installations and other activities carried out by the UN family and a full constellation of partners.

I welcome this growing international chorus of voices calling for action to enable children and persons with autism to lead full and meaningful lives. This is not a far-off dream; it is a reality that can be attained by promoting positive perceptions about autism as well as a greater social understanding of this growing challenge.

I have seen what caring people who work tirelessly for this goal can achieve. Last year, the United Nations hosted a rock concert by Rudely Interrupted, whose members have various disabilities, including on the autism spectrum. They brought the audience to its feet with warm, communicative songs and showed, through the sheer joy of their performance, how much people with disabilities can offer the world.

The words of lead singer Rory Burnside were especially inspiring. "My advice", he said, "to kids who have some form of disability is: don't let it stop you. Use it as your strength; don't use it as your weakness. One red light can lead to a whole bunch of green lights, with a few orange lights thrown in. And the red lights are just a bit of a test. There are definitely more green and orange".

On World Autism Awareness Day, let us capture and share this spirit, and let us intensify global efforts to ensure that children and persons with autism everywhere can benefit from the supportive environment they need to reach their full potential and contribute to society.'

The UK Autism Foundation has called on the leaders of the G20 group of nations to act on Poverty and Autism on the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. WAAD falls on Thursday 2nd April 2009.

World Autism Awareness Day was launched for the first time on 2nd April 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on the recommendation of the State of Qatar.

The UK Autism Foundation is also appealing to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN General Assembly to take action on Poverty and Autism. The credit crunch and the deepening global economic recession has placed huge pressure on families and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. There are many more families below the poverty line.

In the United Kingdom, over 200 parliamentarians of all parties in the House of Commons in Westminster have signed three early day motions backing the call of the UK Autism Foundation on Poverty and Autism.

G20 leaders are flying in to attend the London Summit hosted by HM Treasury at the Excel Centre in London Docklands. Among the leaders attending the G20 Summit is President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Ivan Corea said: 'The G20 group of nations must address the needs of the poor on United Nations World Autism Awareness Day on 2nd April 2009. The global economic recession has brought enormous pressures onto families and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Many still suffer without proper public services. The vulnerable and the marginalised have to decide between heating and eating as they face Fuel Poverty. They need help in 2009 to face the economic crisis. We appeal to the United Nations and the G20 Group of Nations meeting in London to take real action on World Autism Awareness Day.'

The leaders of G20 countries meet in London on 2nd April on UN World Autism Awareness Day. President Barack Obama is also due in the UK to attend the G20 Conference. It affords an opportunity for G20 leaders to reach out to the vulnerable, including families with autism below the poverty line on WAAD. The UK Autism Foundation has urged G20 leaders to help the poor. They desperately need help and financial support. Autism Campaigners feel that not much is being done to help those who are at the bottom of the pile. The vulnerable are taking the brunt of the deepening recession and they are not being adequately supported.

The UK Autism Foundation has appealed to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's living allowance for parents, carers and the Autism Community in the April 2009 Budget. Autism is a 24 hour job and many families are struggling to cope with life during the credit crunch and the economic downturn in the United Kingdom.

The London Summit is headed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the hosts are Chancellor Alistair Darling and Her Majesty’s Treasury, on the agenda are key economic issues: 1. Coordinated macro-economic actions to revive the global economy, stimulate growth and employment - review measures taken and possible further steps 2. Reform and improve financial sector & systems - continue to deliver progress on the Washington Summit action plan 3. Reform international financial institutions (IFIs) - International Monetary Fund (IMF), Financial Stability Forum (FSF) and World Bank.

The UK Autism Foundation has appealed to G20 Leaders and the host Prime Minister Gordon Brown not to walk by on the other side and ignore the plight of the poor. They will be discussing the financial crisis on the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. Those who are facing severe financial pain are parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

The UKAF, a British charity, is deeply concerned about families with autism who are below the poverty line. UKAF has been campaigning on Poverty and Autism and are calling for financial help and support during the economic downturn in the United Kingdom and around the world.

Lee Scott MP, Patron of the UK Autism Foundation (who has championed the cause of autism in the House of Commons) is also calling on Her Majesty’s Government to provide ring fenced funding for autism. He is lobbying very hard on autism on World Autism Awareness Day. Scott initiated a landmark debate on autism in 2007 and met with Prime Minister Tony Blair and autism campaigner Ivan Corea who discuss the serious issues.

The United Nations World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) takes place on Thursday 2nd April this year. UN WAAD will focus on over 60 million people with autism around the world.

The UK Autism Foundation is launching a fundraising drive to mark the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. The charity was recently featured on the BBC News website in connection with the Autism Bill debated in parliament and an interview was also published in the London Guardian. UKAF also spearheaded Autism Sunday which was celebrated around the world on 8th February.

The economic crisis has devastated the charity sector with a huge drop in charitable giving. The Foundation hopes that people will find it in their hearts to give and support the work of UKAF. The charity is lobbying and campaigning specifically on behalf of the poor.

The United Nations World Autism Awareness Day was launched last year by the UN General Assembly in New York on the recommendation of the State of Qatar. Last year Ivan Corea was interviewed by GMTV and CNN for the inaugural launch. The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the UN World Autism Awareness Day last year. Mr.Ban ki-moon said: 'As we advance the universal human rights of children with disabilities, let us focus on building enabling environments for them to prosper as future members of their communities, citizens of their countries and as fully-fledged members of the global community. Let us pay tribute to the courage of children with autism and their families, as they strive every day to confront the disability with a powerful combination of determination, creativity and hope. Let us empower them and respond to their needs today, so as to make our societies more accessible, enabling and empowering for all our children tomorrow. '

To mark UN World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) 2009 on 2nd April - the UK Autism Foundation is now partnering with Justgiving.

Ivan Corea said: 'Individuals, schools, colleges, faith communities, companies can now raise funds in our local community and support the work of the UK Autism Foundation. The partnership with Justgiving is part of the UKAF's fundraising strategy. You can start up your own fundraising page on Justgiving for UKAF, or set up a page in memory of a loved one. We urge urge people to look at the following links and support the work of the UK Autism Foundation on World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD)':

Mr.Ban ki-moon said: 'As we advance the universal human rights of children with disabilities, let us focus on building enabling environments for them to prosper as future members of their communities, citizens of their countries and as fully-fledged members of the global community. Let us pay tribute to the courage of children with autism and their families, as they strive every day to confront the disability with a powerful combination of determination, creativity and hope. Let us empower them and respond to their needs today, so as to make our societies more accessible, enabling and empowering for all our children tomorrow. '

The UK Autism Foundation has urged the government to take decisive action on autism. An Autism Bill was debated in the House of Commons in Westminster on Friday 27th February, it now moves on to the next stage, it cleared the first hurdle by 131 votes to 25. Cheryl Gillan MP's bill called for an end to the postcode lottery to public services. The UKAF supported the bill along with 15 UK charities.

Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation wrote to Ministers Phil Hope and Sarah McCarthy Fry, urging the government to provide new funding streams for education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care. Lee Scott MP who has campaigned tirelessly for autism in the House of Commons had earlier called for ring fenced funding for autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

Lee Scott MP, Angela Browning MP and Cheryl Gillan MP have all brought in Autism Bills in the House of Commons. Autism campaigners are calling for urgent action and support for parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

Ivan Corea said: 'It is heart breaking to see banks being bailed out to the tune of billions of pounds and taxpayers money going towards the bonus schemes and pensions of bankers and yet parents and carers have to fight and stuggle for a few hours of repite care or speech therapy. The deepening recession is bringing even more suffering and parents, carers and the Autism Community need urgent help. We call on the Prime Minister and the Chancellor to provide new funding and end the postcode lottery to public services - once and for all.'
